Why is it that in German, Evangelische = Protestant, and Protestiere = Evangelical (i.e. Fundamentalist)?

There's no logic to languages, as I well know from having a German boyfriend, so there's no real answer to that. It's true though - e.g. the methodist church in Germany is the EMK (Evangelische methodistiche Kirche) and it certainly isn't fundamentalist.
